The Queen's Jubilee: a time for glee or critical enquiry?

In Summer of 2002 Swan Playwrights ran a competition open to all writers living or working in Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Shropshire. The project was designed to generate scripts about issues inspired by the year's jubilee and the key events of the last 50 years. Two plays were selected for professional rehearsed readings...

The Pathless Land

by Rose Marshall. A play about the problems of parenting and parentage. Directed by Kim Greengrass and featuring actors Imran Ali, Rob Swinton, Rachel Howells, Paul Beech, Alexander Delamere and Alison Belbin.

Home Truth

by Rob Clarke. Will Sharon help exorcise Yotsi's demons or bring back a troubled past? Directed by Jenny Stephens and featuring actors Paul Beech, Alison Belbin, Rachel Howells, Alexander Delamere and Imran Ali.

The final reading on Friday 12th July 2002 was well attended and generated a great deal of audience feedback.

A third play, Marking Time by Martin Drury, was selected for additional dramaturgy.

All three writers attended a Stagecoach! (now SCRIPT) radio writing workshop. Parts of the plays were then professionally recorded for the Talking Newspaper, directed by Kim Greengrass. Copies of the tapes are available on request.

This project was made possible by kind support from Worcestershire County Council First Base scheme and an Awards For All grant to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee
